Many flowers and plants require pruning before living through winter or warm spring, so that they can safely overwinter and easier to recover in the next spring. It grows more branches and promotes flowering. So proper pruning is crucial for plants in early spring. But you don’t want to do it carelessly!
For many plants, the dormant period is in winder. When their leaves turn yellow and fall, that means some plants need pruning. Some friends grow very luxuriant plants, but they do not blossom. This is because they were not properly pruned or no pruning at all. Therefore, understanding and mastering some pruning skills will be of great help to planting and flowers.
To foliage plants and trees, the time of pruning is determined by room temperature in winter. If the room temperature is low, trimming should be done before entering the room in order to reduce the crown width and occupied area. If the room temperature is higher, pruning is best to be done before coming out of the room next year, so as not to stimulate the axillary bud germination in winter and grow new shoots to consume nutrition for nothing.
Thinning and shorting is the major point of pruning. Thinning is to cut off dense branches, cross branches, bare branches, slim branches, disease and insect branches and dead branches, in order to facilitate ventilation and light, and reduce the chances of diseases and insect pests.
Shorting is to shorten a part of the branches, promote its germination of side branch, adjust growth. So that the crown distribution is uniform, beautify the tree, conducive to more flowering, more fruiting.
When pruning, make sure the cut is smooth. Cut 1cm above side buds is generally advisable. If the cut is too close to the lateral bud, it will often damage the primitive bodies of stem and leaf in the bud. Also, the bud is easy to air dry. If the cut is too far away from the lateral bud, it will leave extra long twigs, which will leave the tree clumsy. It is also important to make sure the top side buds should be left on the outside of the branches, allowing new branches to grow outward, so that the tree can be beautiful.
Pruning branches in winder can be aggressive to avoid frostbite and make the tree more germinating next year. It is generally good to trim off no more than 1/2 of the original height.
Of course, pruning tools are also important!
Manual pruning shears are more labor demanding which will tend to leave rough cuts for less experienced users. Lithium-ion pruning shears has greater force, sharper and more durable blades to keep the cut neat. Minimal negative impact on plant growth.
